Mazda 787B (1991) — The Rotary Legend That Changed Le Mans Forever
The Mazda 787B remains one of the most distinctive and historically significant endurance racing cars ever built.
Its victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991 was not just a win — it marked the only time a car powered by a rotary engine achieved overall victory at the event. This alone places the 787B in a category of its own within motorsport history.
Unlike conventional piston engines, the 787B used a four-rotor R26B engine. This power unit delivered a unique combination of high-revving performance, smooth power delivery, and a sound that became instantly recognisable on the circuit. The engine’s reliability over 24 hours proved that the rotary concept, often considered unconventional, could compete at the highest level.
The car was developed by Mazda in collaboration with Mazdaspeed and engineered specifically for Group C racing regulations. Its lightweight construction, aerodynamic efficiency, and balance made it particularly effective over long distances. The distinctive orange and green Renown livery has since become one of the most iconic visual identities in endurance racing.
Driven by Volker Weidler, Johnny Herbert, and Bertrand Gachot, the 787B’s victory was also a moment of strategic execution. Rather than relying purely on outright speed, the team focused on consistency, fuel management, and mechanical reliability — all essential elements in endurance racing.
In scale model form, particularly at 1:12, the proportions and design language of the 787B become far more appreciable. Larger scale models allow for a clearer understanding of cockpit layout, bodywork curvature, and race-specific detailing that smaller formats often cannot fully capture.

This type of model is less about display quantity and more about presence. A single piece at this scale can serve as a focal point within a collection, especially when tied to a car with such a singular place in motorsport history.
The 787B is not simply remembered for winning Le Mans. It is remembered for doing so in a way that has never been repeated.
